Plurk: It’s Like Twitter, but Newer

Plurk

You know, if there’s one thing the Web really needs, it’s an easy way for me to let my friends know what I’m doing/eating/thinking/feeling/typing. (If you were here in my office, you’d see that I’m making my deadpan sarcasm face as I type that.)

In reality, it’s to the point that there is a whole culture of Web users who seem caught in a feedback loop: Between Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, FriendFeed, etc (not to mention whatever personal blogs you’ve got going on), you could spend all day updating or reading others updates, at which point you start updating about how you’re updating, and then offering meta-commentary about how you’re updating about updating. At which point your mind goes “plurk” and shuts down. Which is ironic, because Plurk is the name of the new Twitter-on-steroids app.

Plurk: Twitter meets FriendFeed » VentureBeat
May 6, 2008 Update: One of the founders, subtly nicknamed Plurk Overlord, has contacted me, to correct the misinformation I had posted about …

Plurk takes the Twitter idea of constant, short updates and builds on it with better visual elements and lots and lots of features. You can segment your list of friends into “cliques,” for instance, and just Plurk to them, you can build a more robust profile, you can sort others’ plurks. But let’s be real here: if I end up moving over to Plurk, I’ll probably just use all the things that Twitter already had. And I’ll have to start out with zero contacts.

Two problems I’m having with Plurk so far:

1) i can’t find a disintegrate to search by name. i’ve got friends twittering about plurk but i can’t find them unless they mail their welfare url. (mine is http://www.plurk.com/user/kmonson, and feel free to add)

2) You can import your IM/email contacts (supposedly–I can’t get it to work)…but I’d rather import my Twitter contacts so I’m not starting from scratch again.

Your life, on the line - Plurk.com
Plurk is a social journal that let's you publish, share your thoughts, emo-ness, "!%#%"#" and loves. What is up, my friend? See what other people are doing

So here’s my advice: If you and your friends aren’t Twittering already but would like a Twitter-like element added to your life, by all means, go with Plurk. If you’re already on Twitter, and you aren’t bugged by Twitter’s constant crashing, frequent lack of pagination, or flimsy feature set, stick with it. Or just do whatever Robert Scoble does.

Now I guess I’ll go Twitter that I’m Plurking and Plurk that I’m Twittering.
